Website SEO and copy basics for founders

A practical guide to getting found on Google and turning visits into enquiries: search intent, local SEO, schema markup, and the seven things good website copy includes.

In short

  • SEO gets the visit. Copy earns the next step. You need both, working together.
  • Target specific, local, ready-to-buy searches ("spoken English classes in Kakkanad"), not broad words ("English").
  • Give every service its own page, keep your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere, and keep your Google Business Profile current.
  • Schema markup is structured data that helps search engines understand your page. Basic schema can take under 30 minutes to add.
  • Good copy has personality, specific details, short chunks, a clear benefit, empathy, real proof, and an obvious next step.

Getting a website live is the easy part now. You can do it in an evening, and our guide to getting a business website live in two minutes shows how. The harder questions come after: will anyone find it, and when they do, will they call?

Those are two different jobs. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is how the right people arrive. Copy, the words on the page, is how they decide you are the one. This guide covers both, in plain language, with things you can apply yourself this week.

SEO gets the visit. Copy earns the next step.

Start with what people actually search

Nobody looking for a tutor types "education". They type "maths tuition for class 10 near Edappally" or "spoken English classes in Kakkanad". These longer, specific phrases are called long-tail keywords. Fewer people search them, but the people who do are much closer to picking up the phone. That is what transactional intent means: the search itself says "I am ready to choose".

How to find your phrases

  • Write down the exact words customers use when they call or message you.
  • Type your service into Google and note the suggestions that appear as you type.
  • Scroll to "People also ask" and "Related searches" at the bottom of the results page.
  • Add your location: city, neighbourhood, landmark, or district.

Part one: the SEO foundations

One page per service

A single "Services" page listing everything you do is hard for Google to match to any one search. Give each main service its own page with its own heading, description, price range if you share one, and questions customers ask about it. A clinic might have separate pages for cleaning, braces, and root canal treatment. Each page can then rank for its own search.

Say where you are, naturally

Mention your town and the areas you serve in headings and body copy, the way you would in conversation: "Serving families in Aluva, Kalamassery, and Edappally". Do not stuff the same place name into every sentence. Search engines and readers both notice.

Helpful articles with FAQs and summaries

Articles that answer real customer questions bring in searches your service pages cannot. Open with a short summary so a busy reader gets the answer immediately, then go deeper. End with a few frequently asked questions in your customers own words.

Citations and your Google Business Profile

A citation is any place online that lists your business name, address, and phone number (often called NAP). Keep these exactly the same everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, and local directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines to trust which version is correct. For local searches, a complete and active Google Business Profile, with categories, hours, photos, and replies to reviews, is often the single most useful thing you can do.

When other trusted websites link to yours, search engines treat it as a recommendation. For a small business, the realistic sources are local: a newspaper or magazine feature, your trade association, an event you sponsored, a partner business, or a college you work with. Avoid buying links. It rarely helps and can hurt.

A strong technical foundation

  • Mobile speed Most of your visitors are on phones. Compress large photos.
  • HTTPS The padlock matters to both browsers and visitors.
  • Titles and meta descriptions A unique, descriptive title (around 60 characters) and summary for every page.
  • One H1 per page A single main heading that says what the page is.
  • Descriptive URLs yoursite.com/braces-treatment beats yoursite.com/page?id=7.
  • Image alt text A short description of each meaningful image, for screen readers and search.
  • Sitemap and Search Console Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and check which searches bring you visits.

Schema markup: the fix most websites skip

Schema markup is structured data added to your HTML that helps search engines understand what your page is about, not just read it. The simplest way to think about it: schema markup is code that talks to Google. Instead of guessing that a string of numbers is your phone number, the search engine is told so directly.

  • LocalBusiness Name, address, phone, hours, and area served. The most useful type for most shops, clinics, and institutes.
  • Organization Your brand name, logo, and social profiles.
  • FAQPage Questions and answers on a page.
  • Product or Service What you sell, with descriptions and prices.
  • Event Workshops, open days, and batches with dates.
  • BreadcrumbList Where a page sits within your site.

Schema can make a page eligible for rich results, such as event dates, product details, or breadcrumb trails under your listing. Eligibility is not a guarantee. Google decides what to display, and it currently shows FAQ rich results for only a limited set of websites. Schema still helps search engines understand your content correctly.

Part two: copy that earns the next step

SEO can get someone onto your website. Your copy is responsible for making them think: "Okay, this is exactly what I need, and this is the person I want to hire." Good copy usually includes seven things.

  1. Your personality Use your voice, phrasing, humour, and opinions. People choose people.
  2. Micro-specific details Do not just describe how you help. Show it: batch sizes, timings, what happens on the first visit.
  3. Easy-to-digest chunks Specific does not mean giant paragraphs. Short sections, clear headings, lists.
  4. A clear benefit and transformation Tell readers what changes for them after working with you.
  5. Empathy Show that you understand what they are dealing with before you sell anything.
  6. Proof attached to promises Real testimonials, results, examples, stories, or your process. Never invent proof.
  7. Clear next steps Make the call to action obvious: call, WhatsApp, book a visit.

Notice the "after" column does not claim anything it cannot back up. It replaces vague claims with specifics and a process, which are a form of proof you can always offer honestly.

A 10-point checklist for every page

  1. The page targets one clear, specific search phrase.
  2. The title and meta description are unique and describe the page.
  3. There is one H1 that says what the page offers.
  4. Your location appears naturally in the heading or first paragraph.
  5. The first screen tells visitors what you do, for whom, and where.
  6. At least one specific detail shows how you work.
  7. Proof is real, and attached to the promise it supports.
  8. Images are compressed and have alt text.
  9. There is one obvious call to action, repeated near the end.
  10. Name, address, and phone match your Google Business Profile exactly.

Questions founders ask

How long does SEO take to work for a small business?

It varies with competition and how much work you put in. Local changes like a complete Google Business Profile and consistent listings can help within weeks. Ranking new pages for competitive phrases usually takes a few months. Specific, local, long-tail phrases tend to show results sooner than broad terms.

What is schema markup in simple terms?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page that tells search engines exactly what the content is: a business, an address, an event, a product, or a set of questions. Think of it as code that talks to Google. It can make pages eligible for rich results, though Google decides what to show.

Do I need a blog for local SEO?

Not on day one. Clear service pages, accurate location details, and a strong Google Business Profile matter more at the start. A blog becomes useful once you have real customer questions to answer. Articles with a short summary and an FAQ section can bring in searches your service pages do not cover.

Does ClearPrompt do SEO for my website?

ClearPrompt handles hosting and HTTPS and makes editing your words fast with tap-to-edit. It does not run your SEO for you. Choosing search phrases, writing service pages, keeping listings consistent, and earning links are steps you apply yourself, and this guide is written to help with exactly that.

What makes website copy convert better?

Specific details instead of vague claims, short readable sections, a clear benefit, real proof attached to each promise, and one obvious next step. Writing in your own voice and showing that you understand the customer problem also helps visitors decide you are the right choice.
